Gokova Municipality  was a settlement with a population of 2200 governed by a mukhtar and recorded as a village until the local elections of 1999.  In 1998, with the decision of The Council of Ministers, Gokova became a town. As a result of the local elections in April 1999, Gokova became a municipality with an elected mayor.
