Gökova History

In Gökova town, the inhabitants left the shore region in the 1940s because of the swamps and the epidemic diseases which they caused. The govenor of the province at that time, ordered the planting of the eucalyptus trees which absorb and volatilise 600 cubic metres of water per day. The trees are planted on the border of the road connecting Marmaris to Mugla. Akyaka is mentioned many times on other websites as being the ancient city of Idyma. As a point of historical accuracy, Akyaka was not Idyma.  Akyaka was only a small suburb of Kozlukuyu which is a part of Gökova town. The acropolis of Idyma was and still stands on a hill called Kucuk Sakar inland from Akyaka at Gökova which is a different municipality. None of the famous Carian Rock Tombs can even be seen from Akyaka whereas the Idyma necropolis can be seen from just about everywhere in Gökova.  Despite advertising to the contrary, the world famous eucalyptus lined road [ below] is not in Akyaka but it too is part of our town - Gökova Municipality.   By planting the eucalyptus trees, the swamps have been dried and the region saved from epidemic diseases. Today, those eucalyptus trees, unique in the country, have a magnificent beauty with the scene resembling a natural tunnel.       Today in the plain of  Gökova there are two towns called Gokova and Akyaka, six villages named Atakoy, Akcapinar, Gokce, Citlik, Sirinkoy and Yesilova. The population is about 10,000                   Gokova's Dort Yol Kavsagi [Crossroad Junction] is an important centre of transportation. It is the point where the highways of the famous tourism centres of Mugla, Marmaris, Datca, Koycegiz, Fethiye and Antalya join. Gokova town is one of the unique places in the world with it's historical richness and natural beauty.
